Appleby Island, once the magnificent home of a tycoon and planter, is a place of history and mystery in the Sacramento delta. Its story includes hints of tragedy, fueling rumors that ghosts still walk its derelict orchards. Now Patsy McCone, her new lover, and a group of investors are turning the old mansion into an elegant bed and breakfast inn. Summoned by her eccentric younger sister, San Francisco's #1 P.I. Sharon McCone arrives in the teeth of a gale, taking a busman's holiday to investigate mysterious acts of vandalism that are running the project to ruin. But when simple sabotage escalates to savage murder, she finds herself trapped on the island with a desperate killer -- and flung into a raging storm of treachery, violence, and sudden death.
Eye of the Storm A Sharon McCone Mystery Book 7 edition by Marcia Muller Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Eye of the Storm is different from the other books in the Sharon McCone series that I've read. This is more of a "spooky mansion" story. McCone is on her own, basically disconnected from the All Souls collective in this and the other early novels or from the fairly large private investigation firm that McCone runs in later novels. Of course, there are the usual McCone elements -- her depression, lack of direction and messed-up family and romantic relationships. As in some of the other books in the series, McCone whines a lot and drinks a good deal.I enjoy spooky mansion tales and in this case the unusual California Delta setting was intriguing, but Eye of the Storm isn't quite up to the standards of most of Marcia Muller's later work, which are distinguished by the fact that she runs a sizable PI firm rather than operating on her own like most other mystery protagonists. It was easy to guess who the killer was, too.
As other reviewers have noted, the huge number of typos in this Kindle edition are annoying, especially when they come two or more to a page. Apparently the book wasn't so much copy edited or proof read as just run through a spell checker, with words like "here" changed randomly to "her" or "from" changed to "form." My favorite typo was the change of "work" to "wok" -- "I continued to wok on my theory ...." As it happens, a couple of characters were Chinese. The publisher, AudioGo, "The Home of BBC Audiobooks," should be ashamed of itself, and Muller should be embarrassed to have this ill-prepared manuscript for sale.

Eye of the Storm A Sharon McCone Mystery Book 7 edition by Marcia Muller Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Great book - love Marcia Muller.
Sharon McCone visited her sister who is working with others restoring an old mansion on an island in the Delta. I enjoyed the story but was surprised at the number of typos. The editing was not up to par and was so bad, sometimes it was hard to figure out the meaning.
This book was enjoyable. Ms. Muller writes interesting books. This one accurately portrayed some aspects of the Sacramento Delta which interested me quite a bit. This was a good read but not deep, perfect for this time of year. There were good characters and some interesting family dynamics.
Muller's series is always a treat to read. Because I live in her setting (SF Bay Area) I sppreciate that this book takes place in the Sacramento River Delta. Add to the unusual setting a "haunted" mansion and a ghost and you have a perfect book to read on a dark and stormy night.
Sharon is helping her younger sister who is part owner of the mansion - the group is hoping to convert it into a classy bed-and-breakfast. There are many twists and turns in the mystery and more than one crime is committed.
Complex storyline that happens to include murder. It reminds of the closed room mysteries in British Murder Mysteries but much wilder, and involves a motley crew of characters, all of them possible suspects for Sharon McCone, detective. One of the important characters in the story is the wild weather. Loved the location, the atmosphere, and the story. McCone at her best.
Eye of the Storm is a good read. It takes the detective out of her comfort zone and isolates her from the city. The characters in the book are well developed and it is not readily apparent who is behind the series of events occurring at the bed and breakfast being opened by McCone's sister. We get to know her sister better than in other books. I enjoyed it very much. I like that each book is spaced at six month intervals so the stories take place in a era without cell phones and less technology. She is an old fashioned detective, relying on interviewing, researching files and documents, and primarily using her well-honed instincts and observation skills. If you are a fan of Sharon McCone, you won't be disappointed.
I purchased this book in hardcover about 25 years ago, and recently passed it along to my granddaughter. I had remembered it as being a 'cozy mystery' with an interesting setting, and decided to re-read it in the kindle version Either my memory of the book is wrong, or someone felt the need to rewrite the dialog in the digital version to include a lot of gratuitous swearing, presumably to make it more current. What a shame! Not only did it detract from the story, but the numerous type-os on nearly every page were annoying.
